Wow! Now this is a great story! Came to work today after a few days away to find a note from our salesman. It said, "The homeless guy Peter came into the store on Wed. with the keys to your storage room (which is down the alley from our store). He had found the storage room wide open, with the keys in the door, at 1am, so he locked it up and brought back the keys today". !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Barry and I had been there Tues. evening doing some work and somehow we'd left and forgot to lock up. (duhhhh..I know!). We have thousands of dollars worth of inventory in there. NOTHING WAS TOUCHED!
In the eight years we've been in this location we often get the homeless passing through the alley on their way to the bottle depot, or sometimes they'll just hang around and rest in the sunshine. I've gotten to know a few of them as I chat them up a bit, and leave them our empties. I've joked with them to keep an eye on our store, and it turns out, they were. Peter is my new hero!! I would love to have him come by the store so I can thank him in person and also reward him for his honesty and thoughtfulness. If anyone in Kelowna knows him (tall, thin, wears skinny jeans and ball cap), please have him come by. How refreshing to know that people are inherently good regardless of circumstance. NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!
